Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu celebrates Mawuli School’s 75th anniversary, cuts sod for new dormitories

The 75th Anniversary celebrations of Mawuli School were marked by a memorable address from the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who underscored the importance of student-centred education and the need for practical, skills-based learning in Ghana.

Speaking at the grand event, Minister Iddrisu emphasised that the student must remain at the heart of national education policy. “Our curriculum is being revised from kindergarten through to senior secondary school to incorporate artificial intelligence, coding, and electronics,” he stated, noting that these changes aim to prepare young Ghanaians for a rapidly evolving technological world.

In his address, the Minister also highlighted the role of discipline, integrity, and character formation in schools, citing the need to maintain high standards. He remarked, “We will not tolerate indiscipline in our schools, including cases where teachers abuse learners. Any teacher found taking advantage of a student will face strict sanctions. To the students, as you leave Mawuli School, carry with you two core values: discipline and integrity. The future is yours to shape.”

Minister Iddrisu reflected on the long-standing partnership between the Church and the State in Ghana’s education sector. “I am pleased to note that His Excellency John Damani-Malma and the NDC government recognise the significant and ongoing role of the Church in providing education. In the Volta Region, initiatives such as the construction of new campuses and technical schools are being prioritised.”

As part of the celebrations, the Minister also performed a symbolic sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of new dormitories at the school, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving learning infrastructure.

He lauded notable alumni and public figures, including Farah Strong of the party’s youth wing and Chief of Army Staff, who have embodied the Mawuli ethos of excellence. The Minister also acknowledged the efforts of the Headmaster, staff, and governing board in shaping generations of students.

Concluding his address, Minister Iddrisu celebrated the enduring spirit of Mawuli School. “If you wish to see exemplary schools and truly understand what quality education looks like, you must visit a school like Mawuli School. On this note, I celebrate Mawuli School Day,” he said.

The 75th Anniversary of Mawuli School thus stood as a testament to decades of academic excellence, character formation, and the enduring partnership between the Church, the State, and the people of the Volta Region.
