Kebbi PDP rejects adoption of Turaki as northern consensus candidate

The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has rejected the reported adoption of Kabiru Turaki as the northern consensus candidate for the party’s national chairmanship.

The state chapter made its position known following an emergency meeting in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday. In a statement read by the PDP Publicity Secretary, Sani Dododo, the chapter said the decision by PDP governors to endorse Turaki was made without its consultation.

“Kabiru Tanimu has never consulted the Kebbi State chapter about his intention to contest. He has not participated in any party activities in the state,” Dododo said.

He added that the Kebbi PDP fully supports the North-West stakeholders’ view that each state should have the right to deliberate and select a suitable candidate in line with the party’s zoning system.

“Naturally, the Kebbi State chapter rejects the decision to adopt the former Minister of Special Duties as the party’s consensus candidate,” he said.

Northern PDP leaders had earlier endorsed Turaki as the consensus candidate for the forthcoming national elective convention, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State. The endorsement followed a meeting of PDP governors, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, the PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, and other northern party leaders in Abuja.
