Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as more than a friend but family.
Speaking during a condolence visit, Mrs. Johnson Sirleaf described the late Mrs. Rawlings as a woman of strength, faith, and purpose, noting that their relationship went beyond diplomacy.
“It’s almost like family because I’ve had the opportunity to come to her in a family setting to sit with them and talk with them,” Mrs. Sirleaf said.
She recalled her admiration for the Rawlings family, particularly for their eldest daughter, whom she described as a promising leader among African women.
“I’m particularly blessed that her daughter, the oldest one, is one of our major women leaders that we look to for the potential of her leadership in the future,” she remarked.
Offering her condolences, Mrs. Sirleaf prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family.
“To all the family members, may God give you all the strength,” she said.
Reflecting on the late former First Lady’s legacy, Mrs. Sirleaf paid glowing tribute to her lifelong commitment to women’s empowerment and her steadfast devotion to faith and national service.
“This is a particularly important woman in what she has stood for in her life, the events she has promoted in her life, the example she has set for women that are strong in their faith and strong in their commitment to God and to country,” she stated.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Sirleaf urged the children of the late Mrs. Rawlings to continue her legacy.
“May God bless all of you and enable you to be strong enough to sustain this loss and to her children, to follow her path, to her daughters, to walk the journey she walked. It’s a journey of honour. It’s a journey that we all are so thankful for,” she said.
“Thank you all for the privilege of being at this event to meet you and to say a few words,” she added.
Mrs Sirleaf’s touching remarks formed part of tributes following the death of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on 23 October 2025, aged 76. The late former First Lady is fondly remembered for her activism and her unwavering advocacy for women’s rights and empowerment.
