The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked the licenses of 278 small-scale mining companies across Ghana for breaching mining regulations and operating with expired permits.
The decision, which forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to sanitize the mining industry, was announced by the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
According to Mr. Schandorf, the revocation specifically targeted miners who failed to comply with environmental and safety regulations or continued operations beyond the validity of their licenses.

“This action is part of the Ministry’s renewed commitment to ensuring discipline, accountability, and environmental responsibility within the small-scale mining sector,” he stated.
The move reflects the firm stance of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who has vowed to restore order to the sector — one long plagued by illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
For years, Ghana’s small-scale mining sector has faced criticism for its role in deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation, despite its significant contribution to local livelihoods and the national economy.
The latest crackdown underscores the government’s broader strategy to promote sustainable mining practices, protect natural resources, and preserve the country’s environment for future generations.
The Ministry has also hinted at further enforcement actions in the coming months to ensure full compliance with mining regulations and restore public confidence in the management of Ghana’s natural resources.
