Delta govt secures fresh warrant to arraign social media critic Fejiro Oliver

The legal battle between the Delta State Government and Fejiro Oliver has taken a new turn, as the government has obtained a reproduction warrant from Magistrate Court 3, Asaba, to arraign him on fresh, yet-to-be-disclosed charges.

The new case, titled State (Gov. Sheriff) vs. Fejiro Oliver, was filed on 17 October 2025. It mandates Oliver to appear before Her Worship, Mrs Edith Nkechi Anumadu, on Monday, 20 October 2025, for arraignment.

Human rights advocates, including Dr Akima Umukoro, President of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Youth Wing, Worldwide; Daniel Etaga, former President of the Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC); and Comrade Kelly Efemena, among others, have condemned the development. They described it as an attempt to weaponise the judiciary and silence a government critic.

Oliver was arrested for allegedly criticising Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on social media. He was reportedly detained for 21 days at the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Delta State Police Command in Asaba. It was only after sustained pressure from civil society groups and journalists that his detention became public, leading to his eventual arraignment and subsequent bail granted by the Federal High Court, Asaba.
