The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Kabiru, says that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering legal action to prevent Alan Kyerematen from using the United Party as the name for his newly formed political movement.
According to him, the choice of name is “problematic,” given that the NPP traces its political roots to the historic United Party tradition.

“First and foremost, I think the movement for change, the name choosing is problematic because the tradition of the NPP is out of the United Party,” he said in an interview.
In an interview on GHOne TV’s News Tonight programme on Thursday, Kabiru accused the former Trade Minister and his team of attempting to “hide under the flag” of the UP tradition, suggesting that such a move could mislead the public and distort political history.
He further disclosed that the party may test the legality of the name in court.
“I’m sure fair-minded Ghanaians and members of the Republic will first even test it in court to find out what that name is,” he noted. When asked if the NPP would pursue legal action, he responded, “Of course. It is a very good case to test, to see whether that name will even stand.”
The Walewale MP added that he expected Alan Kyerematen and his team to have been “much more thoughtful” in selecting a name for their new political party.
