We must pick the best for World Cup not local or foreign – Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says the idea is not to get the country’s best players to the 2026 FIFA World Cup regardless of whether the player plays on the domestic scene or abroad.

Addo’s recent call-up for the final round of qualifiers included two Ghana Premier League players, Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare and Prince Owusu of Medeama.

Both players had the opportunity to feature during the international window.

There have been calls for the coach to include home-based players for the World Cup but Addo says he is only thinking about getting the best players ready for the global showpiece.

“In general, I don’t think we should look about who is local and not local,” he told Joy Sports.

“We have to look at the performance and I know that everybody wants us to have success so we have to look at the best players. The best players should come, whether they are local or non-local.

“The higher the quality of the group, the higher each one pushes each other.”

As part of their preparations for next year’s tournament, the Black Stars will take on Japan and South Korea in friendly games next month as part of an Asian tour.
