2026 WCQ playoffs: Super Eagles have an Osimhen problem – Ideye

Former Nigeria striker, Brown Ideye, has warned that the current team is heavily reliant on goals from Victor Osimhen, ahead of the 2026 World Cup playoffs.
Osimhen grabbed a hat-trick as the Super Eagles hammered Benin Republic 4-0 on Monday evening, to finish among the four best runners-up in Africa.
It took his tally to 29 goals in 42 appearances, only behind the late Rashidi Yekini who still holds the record with 37.
Osimhen’s six goals in the qualification series also made him Nigeria’s top scorer.
However, no other Super Eagles player came close. Tolu Arokodare, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, William Troost-Ekong, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Akor Adams, Kelechi Iheanacho, Raphael Onyedika and Calvin Bassey all contributed just one goal apiece.
“If Victor Osimhen is the only striker doing numbers when it comes to scoring goals for the Super Eagles, then we have a problem if we make it to the World Cup.
“The other strikers need to step up their game,” Ideye wrote on X.
