The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called on party members to put aside internal divisions and rally behind appointed leaders to deliver on the promises made to Ghanaians.
He made this appeal during a three-day working tour of the Volta Region, where he met with chiefs, community members, and party faithful in the North Dayi District.
Addressing a gathering at Vakpo, Mr Nketiah emphasised that the power the NDC holds today was not handed to the party by chance but through the collective effort and trust of Ghanaians who desired change. He urged members to remember the promises they made to the electorate and work diligently to fulfil them.
“Empty-handed, we came to exchange promises that gave us power. The people of Ghana played their part by voting for us. Now that we hold power, it is up to us to show them that giving us their mandate was not a mistake,” he said.
The NDC Chairman expressed concern over the growing struggle for political positions within the party, particularly after the elections. He described the competition for positions such as District Chief Executive (DCE) roles as healthy but cautioned against bitterness and division, which could hinder progress.
“For every position, there are many who show interest, but only one person can be chosen. When that happens, we must all rally around the one appointed. If our promises remain unfulfilled, Ghanaians will take the power back, because they gave it to us to do a job,” he warned.
He reminded the gathering that loyalty to the party should not depend on personal appointments, adding that the success of the NDC government benefits all its members and the nation at large.
“Those who do not currently hold positions must also support the government, because if the NDC stays in power, your opportunity will surely come,” he added.
Mr Nketiah said his visit was also to thank the people of North Dayi and the Volta Region for their overwhelming support during the 2024 general elections, which saw the NDC secure an unprecedented 185 parliamentary seats out of 276.
“When you beg for something and you are given, it is only proper to return and thank the giver. That is why we are here, to express our appreciation on behalf of the President, the government, and the entire NDC fraternity,” he said.
He also acknowledged that the 2024 election victory was made possible not only by party loyalists but also by Ghanaians across political divides who responded to the NDC’s call to rescue the country from what he described as “bad governance.”
“When Ghanaians realised the country was heading in the wrong direction, we appealed to everyone, regardless of their political affiliation, to see the election as a national duty. Our collective effort has reset the nation, and for that, we are grateful,” he noted.
During the meeting, Togbui Geimakpe, Chief of Vakpo in the North Dayi District, expressed gratitude to the NDC government for including the Vakpo roads in the Big Push Plan and for other developmental initiatives introduced in the area.
“We appreciate the inclusion of our roads in the Big Push Plan and the efforts of our DCE, who has worked hard within a short time in office,” the Chief said.
He, however, appealed to the government to prioritise the improvement of the water system in the North Dayi District, which he described as a pressing need for residents.
Mr Nketiah assured the chiefs and people that the government was committed to addressing their concerns and completing ongoing projects in the area. He reiterated the NDC’s focus on inclusive governance and national development driven by unity, accountability, and service to the people.
