A heartfelt Jumu’ah prayer was held at the National Central Mosque in Accra on Friday to mark the weeklong Silver Jubilee celebration for the Millennium Class of Ghanaian lawyers, 25 years after their call to the Bar. The prayer underscored the class’s gratitude and acknowledged the diverse faiths among its members.
The celebration brought together distinguished members of the class, including Supreme Court Justice Ernest Gaewu, High Court Judges Oppong Twumasi and Ken Kudjordzi, politicians Alhaji Inusah Fuseini and Alhaji Ben Abdallah Banda, and senior advocates such as Brenda Semevor and Nana Abena Amfo.
The event was held under the theme: “Redefining Legal Education for Enhanced Democracy for the Next Generation,” reflecting the class’s commitment to shaping the future of the legal profession.
Chairperson of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr Isaac Acheampong, emphasised the significance of celebrating 25 years of professional journey, highlighting the challenges overcome and the importance of gratitude. The inclusion of a Jumu’ah prayer and a forthcoming Christian thanksgiving service reflects the class’s diverse faith composition and shared conviction to express gratitude for their success.
The celebrations were preceded by a visitation to the Office of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, who offered prayers for the Millennium Class and urged them to continue being good stewards of the legal profession.
Mr Acheampong underscored that the Silver Jubilee was a testament to the resilience and commitment of the class members, who have navigated the complexities and challenges inherent in a long-standing legal career. “Celebrating such achievements is not just a recognition of past accomplishments but also an affirmation of the profession’s values and the contributions made by these legal practitioners to Ghana’s judicial landscape,” he said.
He explained that the celebration also provided an opportunity for the class to reconnect with colleagues, reflect on their collective and individual contributions, and reinforce their commitment to the legal profession and to giving back.
Mr Acheampong noted that the class has initiated a robust mentorship programme targeting basic and primary schools to nurture prospective lawyers. The initiative includes career guidance counselling and donation of textbooks to support students’ academic and career development. He said these initiatives would continue after the celebrations as a way of motivating young students to achieve academic excellence, advocate for reforms in the legal profession, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
