Strike: Nobody can threaten us – ASUU blows hot

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said it will not be intimidated by threats from the Federal Government over its ongoing industrial dispute.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, stated this on Monday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.

Piwuna accused the Minister of Education of attempting to divide university unions in order to weaken them.

“We don’t respond to threats, and nobody can threaten us. The Minister is threatening us, writing to CONUA, SSANU, telling them they can get their salaries. They’re trying to cause division, but all of us are united in this fight,” Piwuna said, insisting that the government must address the root causes of the strike rather than attempt to sow discord among unions.

DAILY POST reports that ASUU had announced a total and comprehensive two-week warning strike affecting all public universities across Nigeria.

However, the Federal Government has urged ASUU to suspend its planned strike, warning that it will enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy if lecturers proceed with the industrial action.
