Kano Hisbah arrests young couple, friends for holding ‘illegal’ marriage

The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested a group of young men and five women accused of conducting a marriage without parental consent or following Islamic legal procedures in the Nasarawa area of Kano city.
The man at the centre of the case is 23-year-old Aminu, who reportedly married 22-year-old Sadiya. Others involved include Umar, 24, who acted as the groom’s representative; Abubakar, 23, who stood in as the bride’s guardian; and 21-year-old Usaina alongside other young women who served as witnesses during the ceremony.
Reports said the couple got married for a bride price of ₦10,000, without the knowledge or approval of their parents or any legal authority.
The Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah in charge of special operations, Dr. Mujaheedden Aminuddeen Abubakar, confirmed the arrest.
He explained that “Hisbah officers acted after residents raised concerns about the unlawful marriage being conducted in their neighbourhood.”
Dr. Abubakar said the act violated Islamic teachings and the state’s laws guiding marriage.
He added that Hisbah would continue to take action against anyone who ignores proper Islamic and legal marriage procedures.
Meanwhile, those arrested are currently in Hisbah custody for further investigation before being handed over to relevant authorities for possible prosecution.
