Pregnant widow banished from Benue community over alleged shoplifting

Tension is high in Ugbema community, Benue State following reports that local elders ordered the expulsion of a heavily pregnant widow accused of shoplifting.

Eyewitnesses said the woman, who recently lost her husband, had allegedly been stealing small household items from local shops in an attempt to feed herself, her young son, and her unborn child.

Her ordeal reportedly began early on Saturday morning when some youths apprehended her and subjected her to public humiliation under the scorching sun.

Community sources disclosed that after the incident, the elders instructed the youths to escort the woman out of Ugbema as punishment for her alleged theft.

The action has sparked outrage among residents and human rights advocates, many of whom described the treatment as inhumane and unjust.

They said the woman required compassion and support rather than condemnation, pointing to her plight as a symptom of poverty and social neglect in the area.

Calls are now growing for intervention from local authorities and social welfare agencies to ensure the woman receives adequate care and protection.
