Renowned online journalist and humanitarian Kobby Kyei has revealed how he left a secure teaching job to follow his passion for blogging and media.
Speaking on The Career Trail, which aired on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, he explained that his love for music and media shaped his journey, but his determination pushed him to take risks.
According to him, after completing Nyankumasi Ahenkro Secondary School, where he studied General Arts, he pursued Music Education at the University of Education, Winneba, graduating in 2016.
“My dad was with the Fire Service Band. At 12 years, he taught me how to play the trumpet. I loved music so much, so I went to Winneba to do Music Education,” he shared.
In 2017, he passed the teacher’s entrance exams and was posted to Ashaiman Senior High School to teach music. But just when his family thought his future was secured, he made a bold decision.
“2017, I told myself, this is your appointment letter. I called my mom and dad and said, ‘You know what? I want to go into blogging. I want to go into social media,’” he revealed.
Kobby Kyei explained that like most Ghanaian parents, his mother believed a government job provided stability and financial security. Hence, that decision did not go down well with his mother.
“My mom called pastors and family elders to talk to me. You know, in Ghana, every parent wants their child to work in the government sector because of that financial dependency. She didn’t understand blogging; her only idea was Facebook. She asked, ‘How will Facebook feed you and your siblings?’” he recalled.
Despite the pressure, he stood by his decision and reassured his parents.
“I told her, ‘Mom, give me a few years. Certificates don’t die. If I fail, I’ll go back to the classroom,’” he said.
Kobby Kyei explained that his passion for media had always been with him, even as a child.
“Growing up, it was either media school or music school. I used to buy Junior Graphic every Wednesday, stand in front of the mirror, and read like a presenter. I admired Abeiku Santana, KSM and all the big media personalities,” he expanded.
Even though he chose music at Winneba, the “media bug” never left.
“I joke that it was between G.I.J and Winneba. Winneba came first, so I went there. But the media passion was still there. So in 2017, I finally decided to go into blogging and the rest is history.”
