CSOs fault Kano government over N1.06bn mass wedding plan

Civil society organisations in Kano have criticised the state government’s decision to allocate N1.06 billion for the mass wedding of 2,000 couples, describing it as a misplaced priority.
The groups, the Centre for Legal Orientation and Humanitarian Aid Initiative (CELOHA Nigeria) and the Kano Accountability Project, KAP, said the funds should have been channeled into improving healthcare and reducing maternal and infant mortality across the state.
In a statement signed by Aysha Mohd, Communication Associate of CELOHA Nigeria, the organisations acknowledged the government’s intentions but argued that the initiative would not deliver lasting socioeconomic benefits.
“We strongly believe that this same amount, if redirected toward strengthening the Primary Health Care system, would have a far more meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of women, children, and families across the state,” the statement read.
The groups noted that increased investment in healthcare would promote healthier living conditions, especially in rural communities.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahideen Aminudeen, said preparations were ongoing for the mass wedding as directed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He explained that the board would soon begin the selection process for the couples to ensure their health status and suitability.
