INEC: Your tenure most disastrous – Lawyer slams Yakubu

Human rights activist and lawyer, Frank Tietie, has blasted the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, saying his tenure is the most disastrous in the history of the electoral body.

Tietie made this statement on Wednesday, while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television.

His comment is coming barely 24 hours after Prof Yakubu handed over the mantle of leadership to the oldest serving National Commissioner in the electoral body, May Agbamuche, in acting capacity.

“The general perception among many Nigerians regarding the ten-year tenure of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is one disaster.

“Nigerians had high expectations because he made numerous promises but delivered very little. He has primarily been politically correct and lethargic in exercising the immense powers of the INEC.

“The failure to implement the promised electronic transmission of results in 2023 is seen as an unforgivable offense by many Nigerians. Ultimately, his legacy is one of significant disappointment,” the lawyer said.
