Black Stars coach Otto Addo says it remains a great honour to serve Ghana at the FIFA World Cup, as he leads the national team closer to another qualification on the road to the 2026 edition.
Addo, who was part of Ghana’s maiden World Cup appearance in 2006 as a player, later worked as a scout for the team at the 2014 tournament in Brazil. He then made history by becoming the first of his generation to qualify Ghana for the 2022 World Cup after edging Nigeria on the away goals rule.
Now, the 49-year-old stands on the brink of guiding the Black Stars to yet another World Cup as Ghana top Group I with 19 points and two matches remaining.
“For me, it’s always an honour to work in Ghana at the World Cup,” Addo told JoySports ahead of Ghana’s penultimate qualifier against the Central African Republic.
“Even in 2014, I was there as a would be my fourth appearance and it would be great thing surely but like I said, there’s still a lot of work to do. We have to make sure that we win and then even then could be that we need the last game as well. So let’s see and we concentrate on the game and not on my personal achievements.”
Addo emphasised that his focus remains firmly on securing results rather than personal milestones, acknowledging the challenge of ensuring Ghana’s place at the global showpiece.
He also extended appreciation to Ghanaians for their unwavering support throughout his tenure. “To the millions of Ghanaians who are all focusing on the game, I’d just like to say thank you. Big thank you for all the support we get throughout from the first game I was a coach to the last.”
Ghana face the Central African Republic in Meknès, Morocco, on Wednesday, before wrapping up their qualifying campaign against Comoros on October 12. A win could place the Black Stars on the verge of a fifth World Cup appearance.
