Police restore calm after violent clash at Sampa main market

The Bono Regional Police Command has restored calm at Sampa after a violent clash broke out between two rival groups, Sammordua and Samgba Gyafla, at the town’s main market on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Sunyani and signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command, the police said they received a distress call about an exchange of gunfire between the two groups, which also led to the burning of several shops in the market area.

According to the statement, a team of police personnel was immediately deployed to the scene to restore order and to escort a Ghana National Fire Service truck and an ambulance that was conveying a pregnant woman to the hospital.

The police team, however, got caught in the exchange of gunfire from the armed groups. Some officers sustained gunshot injuries, while their service vehicle, with registration number GP 686, veered into a ditch during the crossfire.

The statement said the injured officers were rushed to the Sampa Government Hospital, where seven were treated and discharged. One officer who suffered a head injury was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.

It added that patrols have since been intensified in Sampa and the situation remains calm.

The Bono Regional Police Command assured the public that efforts are underway to arrest all individuals involved in the disturbances.
