Police destroy bandits camps in Benue


The Benue State Police command has destroyed bandits camps along the Makurdi – Yelwata and Makurdi -Naka in Benue State.

This was disclosed by the Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP, Ifeanyi Emenari during a visit to his office by members of the Forum of Investigative Journalists, FoIJ, led by Tamenor Kwaghzer.

He explained that the presence of such camps had emboldened criminals to launch violent attacks on travelers and residents.

Emenai said dismantling the camps not only dislodged the criminals but also reduced the frequency of attacks within those corridors.

He noted that before he assumed duty in Benue, violent incidents along the affected areas were rampant, but the clearance operations carried out by the Command have brought a significant decline.

Emenari further stated that, although the criminals have been dispersed, occasional attacks are still being recorded, mainly from suspected herders who sneak into the state to strike unsuspecting victims.

He assured that the police would not relent until peace is fully restored, urging residents to volunteer reliable information that would help flush out “enemies of the people” from Benue.

Emenari attributed part of the security challenge to the bad state of the road, which criminals exploit to their advantage.

Emenari called on residents to embrace peace and harmony, stressing that while crime cannot be completely eradicated, cooperation between the people and security agencies would go a long way in reducing it.

“It is better to live in peace than in crisis,” he said, assuring that the Command had prioritized the protection of lives and property, especially as the Ember months
