Flooding: Lagos govt demolishes illegal structures in Ebute Metta

The Lagos State Government on Thursday, cleared illegal structures obstructing the Jebba/Kano collector in Ebute Metta, in a bid to enhance stormwater drainage and curb recurring flooding in the area.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement exercise in a post shared on his official X handle.
He accompanied the update with video clips showing the enforcement team dismantling concrete barriers and cutting through metal barricades that had been erected across the collector, disrupting the natural flow of stormwater and worsening flooding in the axis.
“Our enforcement team has removed illegal structures erected along the Jebba/Kano collector, Ebute Metta. These encroachments hinder the free passage of stormwater and are a major factor behind flooding in this area,” Wahab stated.
He appealed to residents to desist from encroaching on the drainage right of way or erecting extensions that compromise public infrastructure, noting that maintaining functional drainage systems is vital to protecting lives and property across Lagos.
