The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has assured residents of Mamponteng and the Kwabre East Municipality in the Ashanti Region that the government is committed to completing the long-abandoned Mamponteng Jubilee Market project.
Her assurance followed several appeals from residents and traders for the resumption of construction on the market, which was first initiated in August 2012 through the District Assembly Common Fund and other special funds under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
For over a decade, the project has been left uncompleted, causing significant challenges for traders and the community.
According to the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly, the abandoned site has deteriorated into a hideout for criminals, putting the safety of residents at risk.
Traders, who were displaced as a result of the stalled construction, have also been compell to conduct their business under unsafe high-tension electricity poles, exposing them to danger.
The Vice President, who toured the facility during her working visit to the Ashanti Region on Monday, acknowledged the concerns of the people and said government would do everything possible to secure funding to finish the project.
She stressed that abandoned projects should not be left to waste, regardless of which political party began them.
“Our responsibility is to complete all abandoned projects regardless of who starts it. That is the only way we can build the country together,” she stated.
She explained that government was working to find the necessary resources and urged the community to remain patient and supportive.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the importance of providing decent trading spaces, especially for women whose livelihoods depend on the market.
“If our market women are unable to sell their produce under good market conditions, how do they feed their families?” she asked.
She further stated that once completed, the Jubilee Market would create over 1,000 jobs for residents of Mamponteng and the Kwabre East Municipality, while also boosting local economic activities.
The Vice President also emphasised the government’s commitment to prioritising education in the municipality.
She said children in the area deserve better educational opportunities and facilities, and pledged to support initiatives that will improve their learning environment. “The education of our children needs to be prioritised,” she said.
Residents, who accompanied the Vice President on the tour, expressed relief at her assurance, noting that the unfinished market has been a major source of frustration for more than a decade.
The Vice President reiterated that the completion of the Jubilee Market is part of government’s wider development agenda, which includes reviving a number of abandoned projects across the country.
She said such efforts were crucial for national progress and appealed to Ghanaians to support the government’s initiatives in unity and peace.
