Suspected Boko Haram fighters launched another attack on Kirawa, a border town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, on Monday, killing one civilian and abducting another.
The insurgents also burned down several homes, including the palace of the District Head, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abubakar. Some shops were also engulfed in the flames.
Local vigilantes, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and hunters repealed the assault, killing one of the insurgents and preventing further destruction. However, many people fled into nearby Cameroonian communities for safety.
Kirawa has faced repeated attacks by insurgents recently. On Friday last week, insurgents ambushed travelers along the Kirawa–Pulka road, killing a CJTF member and burning six vehicles.
Confirming the incident, Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, described the renewed wave of attacks as disturbing, especially after many displaced families had only recently returned home with support from the Zulum administration.
He urged the military to strengthen their presence in vulnerable areas like Kirawa, Ngoshe, Agapalwa, and Chikide.
