Benue to establish civil airport, export processing zone

The Benue State government has announced plans to construct a new civil airport featuring international, domestic, and cargo terminals, along with an export-import processing zone, on the Makurdi–Gboko Road.
Commissioner for Lands and Survey Rev. Dr Frederick Ikyaan disclosed this on Friday during a meeting with traditional rulers from Guma, Gboko, Gwer, and Tarka local government areas.
He explained that the airport would be located after Agasha junction, while the processing zone would span about 100 hectares on the opposite side of the road.
Ikyaan revealed that the land survey has already been completed, adding that Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed the immediate commencement of work.
He noted that consultations with traditional rulers were crucial to ensuring the smooth implementation of the project.
In their remarks, Ter Gwer, Chief Dominic Akpe, and Ter Gboko, Chief Gabriel Shosom, welcomed the project but emphasised the need for adequate compensation for affected communities.
They commended Governor Alia for initiating what they described as a landmark development and pledged their cooperation.
The meeting was also attended by senior government officials, including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands, Matthias Antor, and the Director-General of the Benue Geographic Information System, Prof. Daniel Amine.
The proposed airport and processing zone are expected to improve air connectivity, boost agricultural exports, and position Benue as a hub for investment and trade.
