The Benue State House of Assembly on Thursday held a valedictory sitting to honour Chief Audu Ogbeh, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Assembly’s first Deputy Speaker from 1979 to 1982.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode, praised the late elder statesman for a lifetime of service marked by vision and integrity.
Alia said Chief Ogbeh was a “workaholic and playwright who carried the name of Benue with pride,” adding that the deceased “demonstrated uncommon leadership qualities and in fairness served the people justly.
“We feel deeply sad over his passage. He left a legacy that embodied dedication and vision. He showed commitment to the nation and exhibited values of integrity and service.
“He was a man who embraced responsibilities and made the difference in public service in trust and admiration. He fought for justice and progress,” the Governor stated.
Assembly Speaker Alfred Emberga described the former Minister of Agriculture as a tireless advocate for his constituents and a shining example of legislative excellence.
“Chief Ogbeh demonstrated brilliance in service to his people and Nigeria. From his records as a member of the House, all his motions bothered on welfare and development of his people and the entire state.
“Our senior member was a very vocal and effective legislator, who endeared himself to his constituents with activism. He served his people selflessly and it behoves on us to emulate him, having left an enduring legacy,” Emberga said.
Chief Ogbeh, who died on August 9, 2025, aged 78, was remembered not only for his early legislative achievements but also for his later roles as PDP national chairman and Minister of Agriculture.
The ceremony drew dignitaries including former Deputy Governor Chief Steven Lawani and past members of the Assembly, all of whom commended Ogbeh’s enduring influence on Benue politics and governance.
