England coach, Wiegman gives shoutout to Burna Boy at Ballon d’Or ceremony

England women’s national football team head coach, Sarina Wiegman gave an unexpected shout-out to Nigerian Afrobeats star, Burna Boy, while receiving her Women’s Coach of the Year award at 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

The Dutch tactician noted that there would have been “a little bit of dancing” if the organisers had booked the ‘African Giant’ crooner.

“Let’s celebrate our successes. And if Burna Boy is around, maybe we would do a little bit of dancing too,” she said amid cheers.

Wiegman has previously revealed that Burna Boy’s collaborative hit with British pop star, Ed Sheeran, ‘For My Hand’ was her most played song of 2023 on Spotify.

In July 2015, Burna Boy performed at the Three Lionesses’ Euro trophy parade at Beckingham Palace.

Burna Boy also made history as the first-ever African artiste to perform in a Champions League final in 2023.

However, it was his compatriot, Rema, who was given the honour of becoming the first African artiste to perform at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in October 2023.
