One killed, two injured in clash over groundnut theft in Yobe

A violent clash over alleged groundnut theft has left one person dead and two others seriously injured in Kusur village, Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed this in a post on X on Monday.
According to Makama, the incident happened when a 65-year-old farmer, Mataye Umara, and his sons, Modu (30) and Mamman (15), kept watch over their groundnut farm to prevent theft.
Four boys, including a 13-year-old, reportedly entered the farm to steal groundnuts.
“When Umara raised the alarm, two elder brothers of one of the suspects, identified as Sani (20) and Mani (25), allegedly attacked the farmers with machetes,” Makama wrote.
During the assault, Modu Mataye was killed on the spot, while his father and younger brother suffered deep cuts on their heads and arms.
“One of the suspects, Sani Audu, was also injured in the fight.”
Police said the injured victims were taken to the hospital, where Modu was confirmed dead by a doctor.
His body was later released to the family for burial after an autopsy, while the wounded were referred to the Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.
Authorities confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action.
