Yola varsity student arrested for alleged cyber impersonation, sextortion
A student of Modibbo Adama University Yola, Paul John, has been arrested for alleged cybercrimes, including impersonation, sextortion, and cyberstalking.
The 24-year-old 500-level student was picked up by operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command, which said in a statement that the state Commissioner of Police’s Monitoring Unit got on to him after credible intelligence on his activities.
According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, the suspect created multiple fake social media accounts using the names Rose YarLele, Procious Favourite, Wange Precious, Joy Dennis and others, using the photos of women without their consent.
“The stolen images were posted on WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook with offensive captions such as ‘sexy lesbian’ and ‘I am lesbian’,” the police stated.
According to the police, “Investigations revealed that the suspect also collected nude pictures from some victims, which he allegedly used to blackmail them for money and sexual favours.”
The police added that in some cases, the suspect advertised victims for hookup services, thereby tarnishing their reputations.
The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, as directing that the suspect be thoroughly investigated and charged to court.
“The Command remains committed to protecting the dignity, security, and rights of all residents both offline and online,” the commissioner said, advising social media users to be cautious about sharing personal pictures and other particulars with strangers.
