Benue’s oldest pastor, Pa Simon Agu Mashika dies at 95

The Christian community in Benue State has been thrown into mourning following the death of Pa Simon Agu Mashika, widely regarded as the oldest pastor in the state.
He died peacefully at the age of 95.
Born in 1930, Pa Mashika devoted more than seven decades to gospel ministry, preaching with simplicity and unwavering faith.
Even in his advanced years, he remained active in church activities, often driving himself to services and reading the Bible without glasses, a trait that amazed many.
Until his passing, Pa Mashika was a regular presence at programmes of the Remnant Christian Network in Makurdi, where he frequently offered prayers and counsel.
Apostle Arome Osayi, who often invited him to the podium, described him as “a pathfinder, a blazing model and an honourable kingdom ambassador.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the state and beyond. Mourners have described him as a “soldier of the faith,” “a beloved father,” and “a man of wisdom and compassion.”
Many credited him with strengthening the foundation of Christianity in Benue and mentoring several generations of ministers.
One tribute read: “Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice that Papa has fought the good fight and finished the race. His legacy of love for God and passion for souls will remain alive in every life he touched.”
Pa Mashika is survived by his family, spiritual children, and numerous admirers.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
