2026 World Cup: Spain threatens to boycott tournament if Israel qualifies

Spanish government officials have threatened that their national team might not play in next year’s World Cup if Israel qualify.
According to the spokesperson for the prominent Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, Patxi Lopez, they would “assess” the situation if it came to pass.
Earlier this week, a United Nations, UN, commission of inquiry ruled that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel have not qualified for the World Cup since 1970, but stand a chance of qualifying for next year’s expanded tournament.
They sit in third place in their UEFA qualifying group, level on points with Italy who occupy the play-off spot, having played one game more than the Azzurris.
Lopez said: “We will assess the situation at the right time.
“What we want is for people to realize that if Israeli teams cannot take part in sporting events or Eurovision, some are starting to open their eyes.”
