Edo Police officers detained over alleged extortion in viral video

The Edo State Police Command has detained some officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command, Benin City, who were fingered in the alleged extortion of N300,000 from a furniture maker in the state.
A statement issued on Monday by CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, said the money has also been recovered.
DAILY POST reports that a video clip circulating on social media captured a social media influencer lamenting the alleged extortion.
According to her, the young furniture maker was illegally searched by the officers and was later told to pay one million naira.
She said the officers, upon noticing that the young man didn’t have such an amount, collected N300,000 from him.
Police, in an update on Monday, said the “officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the said officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.”
The PPRO further stated that “stern administrative measures have been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties.”
