Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Friday morning

1. The Federal Government has revoked the 5% excise duty imposed on telecommunications’ voice and data services. The National Orientation Agency, NOA, announced the revocation of the telecom tax on voice and data services in a statement issued on Thursday.
2. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has admitted that criminals terrorising Nigerians in different parts of the country are ahead of security agencies in so many ways. Egbetokun said the criminals are no longer “ragtag” because their weapons are sophisticated, well-funded, and they are internationally connected to the extent of using advanced technology.
3. Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi, Presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, in the last election, met in Abuja, on Thursday. The meeting was held amid talks that opposition parties are considering to field either of them in the battle to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
4. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced one of the two Ansaru leaders recently captured by the Department of State Services, DSS, Mahmud Muhammed Usman a.k.a Abu Bara’a, to 15 years for illegal mining. Bara’a, hails from Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.
5. Former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari was on Thursday bailed after facing questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over alleged financial improprieties. He was grilled by investigators over allegations bordering on conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.
6. Dangote Refinery has said it will commence free direct supply of petrol across the country from Monday, September 15. The refinery also slashed petrol retail prices to N841 per litre in Lagos and the South West. For Abuja, Edo, Kwara, Rivers and Delta states, it will be N851 per litre.
7. Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a woman alleged to have dumped her newborn baby girl in a bush in Akwanga Local Government Area. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest on Thursday in Lafia, disclosing that the suspect, identified as a final-year NCE student of the College of Education, Akwanga, has been taken into custody.
8. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said only 14 out of 171 associations seeking registration as political parties met the requirements to proceed to the next stage. Mr Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in a statement after the commission regular meeting on Thursday in Abuja.
9. The Federal Government said, on Thursday, it had not received any official communication regarding the deportation of Nigerians from the United States to Ghana. The clarification followed reports that Ghana had accepted Nigerians and other West Africans deported from the US under a new arrangement.
10. The All Progressives Congress has postponed the inauguration of its National Campaign Council for the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election. The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, who made this known in a statement, explained that a new date for the inauguration would be announced in due course.
