States’ fiscal surplus increases from N2.8tr to N7.1tr – BudgIT alerts Nigerians

BudgIT, a civic-tech organisation promoting budget transparency and accountability, has disclosed that states’ fiscal surplus rose from N2.8 trillion in 2023 to N7.1 trillion in 2024.

In a post via its X handle on Monday, the group attributed the development partly to the Federal Government’s settlement of over N2 trillion in outstanding capital budget arrears from the 2024 fiscal year.

BudgIT said the increase in fiscal surplus provides subnational governments with more space to invest in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

“As the focus shifts to 2025 capital releases, this momentum must be sustained,” the organisation stated, urging citizens to track government spending through platforms such as yourtracka.org and govspend.ng.

The group added that public funds should directly benefit citizens, stressing that increased revenue must translate into development across states, local governments, and communities.
