2027: We remain strong, have national spread, political muscle – PDP

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said in spite of the defection of some of its members, it still remains the party with the required support base, connections, national spread, and political muscle to prosecute the 2027 general elections.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

The statement was against the backdrop of a recent comment credited to Bolaji Abdullahi, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Abdullahi was reported to have said that the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, would not take the risk of returning to PDP for the 2027 presidential election.

Ologunagba, while reacting to the comment, described Abdullahi’s comments about PDP as unwarranted, advising him to use the ADC platform to address serious national issues, not reckless comments about PDP.

According to him, it was unfortunate that Abdullahi was apparently unhappy that PDP was building momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, hence the resort to attacking the party instead of confronting APC.

Ologunagba, however, said that PDP, as the leading opposition party commanding the respect, loyalty, and solidarity of the overwhelming majority of Nigerians across the country, would not join issues with ADC or any other opposition party in the country.

The spokesman further said that instead, the party, with its track record of performance which Nigerians still recall with nostalgia, would continue to vigorously challenge APC on issues, while shaping constructive national discourse and galvanising Nigerians toward voting out APC in 2027.

“In spite of the defections of some of our members, it is clear that Nigerians, who are the real organic strength of the PDP, are still standing shoulder to shoulder with our party.

“The PDP, therefore, remains the party that has the support base, connections, national spread, and political muscle to unseat APC.

“However, as the platform of choice for all Nigerians, PDP remains open to working with other well-meaning and like-minded citizens and groups in the collective aspiration to rescue our nation from APC,” he said.

Ologunagba stated that PDP remained focused on consolidating on the gains of its reconciliatory efforts and the success of its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

He said that the party was working assiduously toward a successful national convention slated for November 15 to November 16 in Ibadan and would not allow itself to be distracted by attacks from any political party.
