FUTA graduate exposes lecturer who failed him in final year despite senate-approved NUGA exemption

A FUTA graduate recounts how a lecturer failed him in final year despite an official exemption letter to represent the school at NUGA 2013.

The story was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @ifdanieldid, who called out the lecturer by name Mr. Oludele Thomas and labelled him “wicked” for what he described as an unjust academic experience.

According to Daniel, he missed a field trip for ESM 315, a 1-unit course, because he was participating in NUGA where he won a gold medal for FUTA.

Though he provided a letter of exemption from the university senate, the lecturer reportedly insisted his class was “more important” and failed him.

When Daniel attempted to retake the course during his extra year, the lecturer allegedly instructed him to carry chairs by hand from an old building to a new one located uphill as a requirement for passing.

“In my extra year, he said I had to pack chairs across campus to pass the course even after I told him I wasn’t feeling well,” Daniel wrote.

Daniel also recalled a separate incident during his 500-level year, when he was selected as one of three Nigerian representatives for the Global Youth Consultation for the World Humanitarian Summit in Qatar.

The event clashed with his final paper (ESM 502), but he chose the global opportunity over the exam, despite warnings from the department.

He claimed that the trip opened more doors for him than his BSc ever did.

“To those lecturers back then, we were just a bunch of young, dumb teenagers they could push around. They forgot kids grow up fast, and we don’t forget. And we’re doing much better economically,” he wrote.

Daniel added that he graduated a year late in 2016 and has only returned to the school once.

He further stated that he has never seen or needed his BSc certificate, which he believes is still lying somewhere in the Senate building.

In conclusion, he wrote: “Mr Thomas… you did me dirty, man. You’re wicked. And you deserve whatever you get.”

The post quickly went viral, prompting a wave of reactions from other users who shared similar academic struggles and condemned the abuse of power by some lecturers.

See some reactions below:

@Bolarinwaiyanu: “Chai, I am so sorry, man. A lot of people didn’t know the price I had to pay! I feel you, brother. I’ll never forget the HOD words to me… Chai. It is well. Thank God we didn’t fail in life.”

@10Qmedia: “And you did? You didn’t challenge him? Sometimes, we let these people do these things. I attended FUTA as well, grad in 2012. The one lecture that bullied people in my dept, I stood up to him when I had encounters with him, and he got the clue.”

@Lino_bawse: “Omo you are nice, you still addressed him as “Mr” ?? Dem no dey address devil with Mr na.”

@JoguesCrypt: “Bro Nigerian lecturers too evil, I sabi wetin my eyes see when I been go do clearance.”

@Saodami1: “Raise am, raise am. They can’t do anything to you anymore. Save other students from his wickedness.”

@1OftenWonderWhy: “Please confirm if he’s a deacon or pastor, nah dem dey wicked like this for Nigeria.”

@henryagbaje1: “Are you sure what you are doing is not cyber bullying. Putting his picture and place of work out there has consequences. From my experiences, representing your school in sports activities doesn’t deny you access to write exam after such game; if permission was properly sorted..”
