'Buhari begged me to fight for the poor' - Peter Obi

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has shared an emotional moment he once had with the late President Muhammadu Buhari, recalling a heartfelt appeal made during one of their encounters.

Speaking at the Third Day Prayers held in honour of Buhari, Obi said the late president’s words have remained with him till today.

“I had the opportunity of meeting late Muhammadu Buhari while I was campaigning, and I remember his words till today. He said to me, ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That’s all I always remember,” Obi said.

Describing Buhari as a man of simplicity who truly cared for the masses, Obi added that the former president did his best within his capacity and will be remembered for his deep concern for the underprivileged.

“Buhari lived and died thinking about the poor. He believed leadership was about service to the people, especially those struggling to survive,” Obi said.

He used the opportunity to call on current and future leaders to reflect on the legacy of service and compassion.

“We have to all learn how to serve our country, knowing that one day, we will all be called back by our creator,” he added.

Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital after a brief illness, was buried in Daura, Katsina State, in line with Islamic rites.

His burial was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other dignitaries, with thousands of sympathisers paying their last respects.
