The victory, a masterclass orchestrated by head coach Enzo Maresca, not only secured global bragging rights for the Blues but also sent a clear message.

What Townsend said

“I can’t believe what I’m seeing,” exclaimed former England midfielder Andros Townsend on DAZN, echoing the sentiments of millions.

He added, “I’ve never seen PSG turn the ball over as much as they have in this first half.

“Full credit to Chelsea for their willingness to track the ball in this New York heat.”

PSG, who had swept aside all-comers this season, from clinching the Ligue 1 title to demolishing Inter Milan 5-0 in a one-sided Champions League final.

They had breezed through the Club World Cup, even beating Bayern Munich with nine men and thrashing Real Madrid 4-0 on their path to the final. Yet, it was they who were left stunned.

Even before the half-time spectacle, Chelsea had stormed to a three-goal lead. Cole Palmer, the tournament’s eventual Golden Ball winner, netted two superb goals and then turned provider for summer signing João Pedro, who completed the first-half rout.
