Man reveals police kidnapped him over cult claim while returning from church

A Nigerian man has taken to social media to share his traumatic encounter with police officers who allegedly handcuffed and abducted him on suspicion of being a cultist.
In a series of posts shared on TikTok, the man recounted that the incident happened around 8 p.m. while he was returning from church.
According to him, he was stopped by police officers at TV Road, opposite Baptist High School, and was asked to switch off his car headlights and open his boot.
He said he complied, but things escalated when an officer inside a parked Sienna vehicle began shouting, accusing him of being a cultist.
“I never knew some policemen were hiding in a very dark corner with their Sienna. They just stopped me and shouted at me to switch off my car light and open my boot. I did,” he said.
“Immediately, one of them collected my phone. The officer inside the Sienna was shouting, ‘Access that guy, identify that guy. That guy is a cultist.’ But I kept saying I’m not a cultist.”
Despite presenting his car documents, the officers insisted on accessing his phone to “identify” him.
When he refused, he said they forcefully handcuffed him and threw him into the back of their vehicle.
“I gave them my car papers, they checked it and said I should go, but one insisted, ‘You’re a cultist. Open your phone now. We must identify you.’ I told him he can’t open my phone. They bundled me, put handcuffs on my hand, shoved me in the back seat and held me for up to an hour,” he narrated.
He added that he was not allowed to make any phone calls and was accused of having a secret mission in Benin based on what they was “intelligence.”
“I’m very, very traumatized. I don’t know what to say about what I experienced with the Nigeria Police Force. Should I call them police or kidnappers?” he said.
As the video circulated online, concerned Nigerians flooded the comment section to express outrage and sympathize with the man over the alleged abuse of power.
