2027: “I’ll do just one term if I get ADC presidential ticket” – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that he will serve only one term in office if given the 2027 presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amaechi made this statement during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.
The former Rivers State governor explained that his decision to commit to a single term is rooted in the need to maintain the country’s fragile political balance between the North and South.
He argued that since President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, is expected to complete four years by 2027, it would only be fair for another southerner to serve a single term, after which power would shift back to the North in line with what he described as an “unwritten agreement.”
“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must stick to that unwritten agreement that says south eight years, north eight years,” Amaechi stated.
He recalled how he opposed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration because, according to him, there was a prior agreement for power rotation which the PDP failed to honour.
“I led the fight against the PDP government because there was an agreement that the government at that time would spend four years, and after that, power would return to the North. But the government reneged, and I said, ‘No, that would be unfair and dangerous for the country’s stability, because the North will react.’ So, the best thing to do is to allow the North to complete their turn, just like I’ll insist that the South must be allowed to complete theirs now,” he said.
When asked directly if he would limit himself to one term in office if elected president under the ADC, Amaechi replied, “Of course.”
He stressed that Nigerians know him as someone who speaks his mind and does not make promises he cannot keep.
“Nigerians know that I speak my mind.Nigerians know that what I cannot do I will not say,” he added.
Amaechi also criticised the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that life has become more difficult for ordinary Nigerians under his leadership.
He was one of the prominent figures who recently announced the adoption of the ADC as the new political platform for opposition forces seeking to challenge Tinubu’s government in the 2027 elections.
